GRAPHIC REALIZATIONS (2019-2022)

In music, the “score” is anything that instructs your performance through any combination of symbols, shapes, or words. While a composer creates the score, the only people who ever see it are the performers who interpret it for the audience. What if the “score” was a recording that instructs the creation of a visual work? Graphic Realizations aim to do just this, allowing the visual work to be the performance of the “recording-score.”

Graphic Realizations are a way for me to create a visual of the listening experience of a musical work. It is a visceral response to what I hear; utilizing my musical training as a composer and performer informs the process, structures, shapes, lines, and so on. How does the form of a musical gesture relate to the curvature or a line or shape? How does the rhythm of a phrase create a sense of movement, repetition, or articulation? By listening to a musical work, without any preplanned notion of what the visuals may look like, the creation of a Graphic Realization results from an impulsive and unpredictable performance.
